Japanese Mt. Fuji rice cracker. I couldn’t dream of Mt. Fuji last night so I am going to eat it!
Hatsuyume is the Japanese word for the first dream had in the new year. In Japan, the night of December 31 was often passed without sleeping, thus the hatsuyume was often the dream seen the night of January 1.
So did you had a dream last night? Traditionally, the contents of the dream would foretell the luck of the dreamer.
It is considered to be particularly good luck to dream of Mount Fuji, a hawk, and an aubergine.
I understand Mt. Fuji and maybe hawk. Mt. Fuji is a beautiful, magnificent, the highest mountain in Japan. Hawk is strong and clever.
But why aubergine??
It seems it is because the word for aubergine in Japanese “Nasu” pronounced the same way as the verb with meaning “to accomplish or “to achieve”.
I hope you had a nice dream last night to foretell a good prosperous year.
